DERMATOLOGY QUESTIONS & DIAGNOSTICS

You will of course know about the fantastic website: http://www.dermnetnz.org/ which will give you photos of practically all dermatology conditions....

Below are a list of common conditions seen in hospital and community patients. By no means exhaustive, they are useful to memorize and look at pictures of them.

I have written a host of prompter-questions below to answer which should prompt you to look further into issues around skin disease.


Key Skin Manifestations
Erythema nodosum = painful, blue-red shins = caused by?

Erythema multiforme = target lesions, symmetrical with a central blister = caused by?

Erythema chronicum migrans = small papules --> large ring 48h to 3months --> caused by?

Erythema marginatum - pink, coalescing on the trunk --> caused by?

Pyoderma gangrenosum - nodulopustular ulcers - caused by?

Dermatomyositis = Gotron's papules, heliotrope rash and Shaul sign. What antibody will be positive in a screen?

Acanthosis nigricans - warty lesions, pigmented, axilla and neck. What cancer is it associated with?


Can you name the key skin manifestations in the following conditions?
Diabetes, Crohns, Coeliac disease, Liver disease, Malabsorption disorders and hyperthyroidism?



Could you describe the appearance of the following conditions as they look on the skin?
Eczema - what are the different types? What treatment regimes can you think of?
Dermatitis - what different types are there and is it different to eczema?
Lupus - what can you see?
What are the causes of pruritus? Treatment for itch - creams and tablets?
CREST - what does CREST stand for and what skin manifestations can you see in it?
TEN - toxic epidermal necrolysis - what is this?
Burns - how would you distinguish the category of burns? Could you outline a common management plan for burns? Is there a model or set of 'rules' to determine % body area affected?
Burns - would you burst a large  burns blister?
Necrotising fascitis - how would you ensure you did not miss this? What differentials would you include?
Cellulitis - how does it travel in the body? What organism causes this most commonly and why? (think size of microbe...) What antibiotic would you commence?
Psoriasis- are there different types/links with other disease? 
Melanoma - ABCD approach? 
Acne - regimes for treatment and a definition?
Apthous mouth ulcers
Ulcers - arterial vs venous?  

BCC - what is this? How would you distinguish this from other skin lesions - what are the common characteristics? 
What is a subungal melanoma?
What is lichen planus?
What signs do you see in measles?

What is stomatitis - where is it seen?
What do you see in scarlet fever?
Are there common fungal conditions? Where do they affect? Who do they affect?
Can you talk about the four main vascular lesions - telangectasia, strawberry neavus, petechiae and ecchymosis?
Can you name the steroid creams in order of potency?
What is the difference between E45 cream and Doublebase cream?
